The 2018 Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of La Mirada, will be held on Friday, February 2, 2018 at the La Mirada Activity Center from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. The Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser is named after the late Lou Piltz who served on the Board of Directors and also served as President and Treasurer of Meals On Wheels La Mirada. The Spaghetti Dinner included spaghetti, meat sauce, salad and garlic bread, as well as entertainment, and two raffles. Desserts were provided by the La Mirada Ebell Club for a nominal donation. We are very grateful to The Kiwanis Club of La Mirada and the La Mirada Ebell Club for their ongoing support!

I began working at Meals On Wheels La Mirada in December, 1983. Pat Blanford the office manager at the time had told me that she would be leaving her job and asked me if I might be interested. I had known Pat because I had been a volunteer at the Volunteer Center and with the City of La Mirada. I told her that I was interested. I was interviewed by Jack Schmitt, who was the President of the Board of Directors and Carol Cooley who was the Director of Human Services with the City of La Mirada. I was very nervous during the interview but I had a good working relationship with Carol Cooley which put me at ease a bit. I think one other person was interviewed for the job besides me. I was offered the job and began training with Pat. The original people on the Board of Directors at the time were: Mary Jane Maloof, Dorothy Craft, Elaine Jellerson, Jack and Colleen Schmitt, John Hendren, Jerry Oxman and Florence Reed. There was a lot to learn and I remember being very overwhelmed at all of the responsibility the job entailed, especially the routing! I thought to myself, “How will I ever be able to do routing, when I don’t even drive”. My guardian angel must have been watching over me, because I somehow got over my fear, and just jumped in and did it in spite of my doubts and fears!
Our office was located at Kling Center in those days, which was located on Bluefield Ave. in La Mirada. It had been a school at one time, and the City of La Mirada had reopened a Human Services Department there which included: The City’s Human Services Staff, La Mirada Volunteer Center, Probation Department, SASSFA’s Senior Nutrition, State Employment Office, Straight Talk and Meals On Wheels. In the early years, Meals On Wheels’ meals were provided by La Mirada Community Hospital which was located on Imperial Hwy. We had three routes then and used big, metal hot boxes to keep our hot meals warm and hard-sided ice chests to hold our cold meals. The hot boxes were stored at the Hospital in those days, not in our office. In the 1980’s we served 30 – 36 clients per month, and in the 1990’s we served approximately 40 – 50 clients per month and today we are serving 70 to 80 clients per month! After La Mirada Hospital closed in 1992, we were very fortunate that Whittier Hospital on Janine Dr. in Whittier offered to provide our meals for us! In 2009, we were delighted that Portofino Ristorante Italiano began providing delicious meals for our clients!
I have helped with many different fundraisers over the years! In the early years, I can recall working on rummage sales (one of which was held on my driveway), bake sales, raffles, walk-a-thons, line dances, big band dances, Celebration In the Park Events and more Spaghetti Dinners than I can count! The first Spaghetti Dinner was held at the Holiday Inn Hotel and was sponsored by the Manager of the Holiday Inn who was a Kiwanis Club Member! That started our long and wonderful association with the Kiwanis Club of La Mirada! Many fantastic Kiwanis Club members have served on our Board in the past including: Dr. Ed Norman, Ray Haugh, Bob Stone and Lou Piltz.
My favorite part of working with Meals On Wheels has always been working with our volunteers! I have been truly blessed to know hundreds of kind and caring volunteers throughout the years! They are the most loving people that I have ever known. In December, 2009 I began working on a website for Meals On Wheels, which has been a fun learning experience for me! As of this date, Meals On Wheels has served over 491,500 meals to 2,260 different clients! It has been my privilege to have had a small part in making that possible!
Meals On Wheels has been a true labor or love for me and it is such a joy for me to see how far MOW has come since I began my journey with this fine organization 30 years ago!

Meals On Wheels and Portofino Ristorante Italiano celebrated our 4 year anniversary in August, 2013! How time flies when you are having fun! We are so grateful to Portofino for their fantastic service, excellent food and helpful staff! We are looking forward to many more years working with Portofino! Many thanks to Ben, Ellie, Nick and staff for their wonderful service!

FAREWELL TO OUR WONDERFUL FRIEND LOU PILTZ
It is with great sadness that we tell you that our beloved Board Member and friend Lou Piltz passed away on Wednesday, March 20, 2013! Lou was such an amazing person, it would be impossible to list everything that Lou has done to serve our community over the years but we will try to include some of the highlights here. Lou was born in 1921 in Chicago, Illinois and married his high school sweetheart Sylvia in 1941. In 1943 Lou enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps where he was stationed in many locations, including Panama. Lou and Sylvia raised two wonderful children, Fred and Jan, and worked as a store Manager at Hiram’s Market which later became Luckys. After Lou retired from the grocery business, he went back to school at the age of 73 and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services with an emphasis in Counseling. Lou was associated with many fine organizations such as the Kiwanis Club of La Mirada, Senior Net, The Alzheimer’s Assocation, The Senior Mentoring Program, read to the children in the Tiny Tot’s Program, performed magic at numerous City events, served on the Planning Commission and on the City Council, where he served as Mayor, and was a very active member in Temple Beth Ohr. Lou joined the Meals On Wheels Board in 1995, where he served as President and Treasurer many times. Lou always brought a lot of fun and enthusiasm to everything he did. He had a warm and outgoing personality as well as a wonderful sense of humor, and always seemed to have a twinkle in his eye! Lou is survived by his wife Sylvia, two children and five grandchildren! Lou was well loved by everyone who was lucky enough to know him! Lou had a strong commitment to helping others and Meals On Wheels La Mirada will never be able to express adequately how grateful we are to have had him with us in the “Meals On Wheels Family”. How truly blessed we were to have known Lou Piltz! There will never be another one like him!

Our wonderful volunteer, friend and Board Member, Elaine Jellerson celebrated her 30th anniversary as a Meals On Wheels volunteer! What a remarkable contribution she has made to her community! Elaine has spent countless hours working at every fundraising event and function that MOW has participated in since 1981, including the Celebrations In The Park, Spaghetti Dinners, Rummage Sales, Walk-a-thons, Bake Sales, Fireworks Sales, Country Line Dances, Anniversary Celebrations, Volunteer Recognition Events, Wrapping gifts for our clients during holiday time, and addressing envelopes for mailings, etc. Elaine has also always faithfully provided coffee and refreshments for every Board Meeting as well as taking on the responsibility of securing donations of prizes from local businesses for the annual Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser. Elaine also delivers meals to our clients 2 or 3 times per week! What an amazing lady! Elaine is the epitome of enthusiasm, she exudes such a positive spirit in everything that she does! How very fortunate Meals On Wheels is to have Elaine Jellerson on our team! (This seems appropriate since Elaine is an avid sports enthusiast). Thank you, thank you, thank you, dear Elaine for giving your time so selflessly to Meals On Wheels for 30 years! You are appreciated from the bottom of our hearts!
